A good night's sleep starts with the right mattress and a good bed, so it's important to know exactly how to take care of your mattress. Effective mattress cleaning techniques are key to helping your mattress last you longer, and provide you with more great nights of sleep. Since we spend almost one-third of our lives in bed, it's important to know how to clean your mattress and care for it properly. If you take care of your mattress, it will take care of you. If like many people you haven't really given mattress cleaning much thought, you may want to think about this - during the six, seven, eight or more hours you spend in bed each night, dead skin cells, sweat and oil from your skin will make your way on to your mattress and this will build up over time.
Here we give you some top tips on how to clean your mattress and make sure you have a happy, healthy sleep.

1. Ditch the dust and get out the vacuum

The fastest and easiest way to remove dust that builds up inside and on your mattress is to use your vacuum. Many vacuums will come with a specific upholstery tool, which is great for mattress cleaning! Run the vacuum nozzle over the top and sides of your mattress, and if you can, flip the mattress over and vacuum the underside too. Make sure you press the nozzle firmly into the mattress to make sure you're reaching dust that has settles deep beneath the mattress's surface. If you have a steamer, you could also run this over your mattress before using the vacuum as this will help to kill and remove any dust mites near the surface of your mattress.

2. Use protection

Whilst we're all aiming for a night full of sweet dreams, accidents do happen. If you have a child who is prone to bed wetting, a mattress protector is a must. A mattress protector will soak up any liquid from accidents and spills before they soak into the mattress, helping to keep it clean and prevent it from getting damp. Most mattress protectors are machine washable, giving them the added benefit of being a great way to fight off bacteria. Simply put your mattress protector on a hot wash setting and you'll remove any bacteria lurking within the material.

3. Clean stains safely

Even with careful protection, stains can occur, and when they do it's important that you know how to clean your mattress safely. A specific upholstery shampoo is usually the best way to remove a stain without damaging your mattress. Most will come with instructions and directions for use so you can be sure you're using the product correctly. If a stain does occur, use an upholstery shampoo as directed to remove it. You can also use alternative cleaners such as 'dry suds'. Mix around a quarter of liquid detergent and a few teaspoons of water, mixing as you add the water a spoonful at a time. The mixture should then start to foam up. Scrape the top layer of foam into a small bowl and rub directly into the stained area of the mattress. Try using a dry sponge or soft brush to avoid getting the mattress wet. Once you've scrubbed the stain away, make sure you leave the mattress exposed so that it can dry fully before you replace your bedding.

4. Keep humidity levels low

Dust mites thrive in moist air, so by keeping the humidity in your bedroom as low as possible, you discourage the growth and development of dust mites. You can use a portable dehumidifier to help with this and should aim to achieve humidity levels of between 30 and 50%.

5: Wash bedding in hot water, often

Dust mites can't survive temperatures of 55 degrees Celsius or higher but can survive in cold washes. You should aim to wash your pillowcases once a week to prevent dust mites growing in them and spreading to your pillows and mattress. Taking your pillows and blankets to be dry cleaned once every six weeks for an added level of cleanliness. Great mattress cleaning revolves around keeping the rest of your bed clean too, so make sure you take care of your bedding.

6: Remove the houseplants

Plants may be nice to look at and can often add a calming element to your bedroom, but they can be a breeding ground for a number of things you don't want near your mattress. Dust, pollen, insects and microbes, all love plants, but your mattress won't love them! If you really want some foliage to create a relaxing atmosphere in the bedroom, try using fake plants instead.

7: Deodorise it

You might not notice your usual bodily smells, but over time your sweat can build up on your mattress and leave a bad smell in the room. A great mattress cleaning tip is to sprinkle your mattress with baking soda and gently rub with a scrubbing brush. This will help the baking soda get deep into the mattress fabric where the smell lies. Let the baking soda settle for 10 minutes and the run over the mattress with the vacuum to draw out the baking soda and lingering smelly particles.
